Personal Care

Hands-On Help With Bathing, Dressing, and Daily Routines at Home

Personal care is the hands-on side of home care in Dayton: help with the activities of daily living, meaning bathing, toileting, dressing, grooming, and the transfers that make those tasks possible. It requires no doctor’s order, and it is the help most families need long before they need a nurse.

Lavender Home Care Solutions has provided personal care in Dayton since 2009. From our downtown office, caregivers cover Montgomery and Greene counties, handling these tasks with enough discretion that your loved one still feels like the adult in the room.

Signs Your Parent Needs More Help Than They Admit

Almost nobody asks for this help directly. It usually shows up as small changes a visiting family member notices before the senior does:

  • Showers skipped for weeks, or sponge-bathing at the sink because the tub got frightening
  • The same clothes worn for days, or a decline in grooming they would once have been mortified by
  • Pill bottles still full past their refill date
  • Noticeable weight loss, or a fridge holding food well past its date
  • Bathroom accidents nobody brings up
  • Furniture-walking through the house, or avoiding the stairs entirely

Two or three of these together usually mean the daily routine has stopped working, even if nothing dramatic has happened yet.

The Turning Points That Bring Families to Us

Most of our clients come to us at a specific turning point rather than a slow decline:

  • After a stroke. One-sided weakness changes dressing and transfers overnight, so caregivers work the affected side first and support the chair-to-bed move that families are most afraid of getting wrong. Our stroke care covers the rest of the recovery.
  • Living with Parkinson’s. Tremor and rigidity make buttons, razors, and stepping into a tub genuinely unsafe. Caregivers time the help around medication windows, when movement is easiest.
  • Memory loss. Dementia rarely takes away the ability to bathe first. It takes away the willingness, which is why the same familiar caregiver matters more here than anywhere.
  • Home from the hospital or rehab. Discharge orders often assume someone is home to help with the shower and the stairs. Frequently nobody is.
  • Arthritis and general frailty. No diagnosis required, just shoulders that no longer reach behind the back and knees that no longer clear the tub wall.
  • A spouse who has been doing it alone. Lifting a partner is the point most caregiving spouses physically cannot pass, and it is usually what prompts the call.

What Our Caregivers Help With Every Day

Care plans rarely start with everything at once: some families book two morning visits a week for bathing, others need a caregiver through the full day, in Dayton and in nearby Kettering and Oakwood alike. If your loved one still manages daily tasks and mostly wants company, companion care is the better fit.

Bathing

Most Dayton homes still have a step-over tub, often with the only full bathroom upstairs, which turns a shower into a balance test. Caregivers protect footing and privacy both, and our Alzheimer's and dementia care team knows how to ease resistance when memory makes bath time a fight.

Toileting

The help seniors resist most, so we treat it as a dignity issue first and keep the routine quiet and consistent. When nighttime trips are the real difficulty, overnight care covers those hours.

Grooming

Hair, shaving, denture care, and dressing seem minor until they quietly stop happening. Caregivers handle all of it and catch what families an hour away cannot see over the phone.

Meal Preparation

Caregivers cook what your loved one will actually eat, then sit with them while they do. Appetite and weight are early warning signs, and someone in the kitchen catches them before a doctor would.

Medication Reminders

Ohio limits what a non-medical caregiver can do with medication, so we prompt and observe rather than administer. That still solves the usual problem, a full pill bottle sitting past its refill date, and skipped doses get reported to the office.

Mobility Assistance

Transfers, stairs, and appointments are most of a caregiver's physical work, plus the walking that keeps a senior off the couch six months from now. Even the brick ranches around Huber Heights have porch steps that ice over by December, and our fall prevention work targets where balance actually fails.

What Caregivers Can and Cannot Do

Personal care runs right up to the edge of medical care, and most families are unsure where that line sits. What our caregivers handle:

  • Transfers, including two-person assists. One caregiver manages most transfers. When a parent’s weight or weakness makes that unsafe, we staff two, and caregivers are trained on gait belts and transfer boards.
  • Incontinence care. Briefs, cleanup, and overnight changes, handled as routine rather than as an event.
  • Skin checks. For anyone spending most of the day in a chair or bed, caregivers watch pressure points and report changes before a sore develops.
  • Hoyer lifts. Caregivers can operate a lift already in the home once trained on that specific unit.

What requires a nurse instead: wound care, injections, catheter and ostomy changes, tube feeding, and anything involving vital signs or a doctor’s order. If an assessment turns up a need on that list, we say so and point you toward home health.

Hear From Our Satisfied Clients

Bernard & Lavender were great for the past several years. From the beginning, Bernard personally went out of his way to help pair my mom with the perfect aide. The office staff were always helpful and kind whenever I needed them for anything at all. The entire company is kind and caring and I 110% recommend them for anyone that needs care for their loved one. I went through 3 home health care companies for my mom before I found Lavender. Lavender truly cares about their clients♥️

Mary Rupert

Needless to say I wholeheartedly am thankful for their services and hope we return to the Ohio area in the future where I can call on them again when care for my mother is needed whether it's part time or full time. To the people at Lavender, I can't thank you enough for making my mother's trip feel less like she was getting care but rather she had people that cared for her as a person.

Fernan Joco

I've been a client of Lavendar Home Care Solutions for approximately 3 years. I'm very pleased with my caregiver. She is always very punctual. She does a good job with the light housekeeping. I like the fact that I have the same caregiver every shift. She always asks if I need help with anything else before she leaves. Thanks for the good care I receive.

Linda Johnson

Lavender has been a God send to my parents, along with myself. As an employee, I’m blessed to work for them, always there helping any way they can. My parents get their home needs met through them. They are always there to help my parents, and make sure they have everything they need! Thank you Olivia and Bernard!

Jenny

During the last six or so years I obtained help from Lavender Home Care Solutions in dealing with several home care issues. They have always responded promptly to my needs and they have always provided efficient and professional services at a reasonable cost. This is a very good home care service.

Ted Shank

Lavender has been wonderful to work with my care schedule and grandfather a family member in to assist me. They make a sometimes difficult situation much easier and are flexible whenever I need to change things.

Shelley Tippett

From the very first phone call everyone that I spoke with at Lavender home care was professional, kind and helpful. The owner returned my call after hours and was so helpful and concerned about finding someone that could help care for my father. The owner personally made the in-home assessment and asked great questions so we could find a caregiver that was the right fit for my father’s needs. My father's aide was kind, joyful and caring. If you are looking for caregivers for your family members, I highly recommend Lavender Home Care Solutions.

Monica Johnson

I have enjoyed a close working relationship with the staff of Lavender. They work closely with me to ensure my daddy's needs are met. Any possible issues are always addressed quickly and personally by the owner.

Why Dayton Families Trust Us With This Kind of Care

Personal care means a stranger helps your mother out of the shower, so we built the company around keeping caregivers long enough to stop being strangers. Bernard Dalichau started Lavender after caring for his own grandfather and still runs many first assessments himself, for families in Dayton and Centerville alike: 1,000+ served, BBB accredited, and winner of the 2019 BBB Eclipse Integrity Award.

  • Turnover under 10%. The same familiar caregiver, not a rotation. With bathing and toileting, that is the difference between accepting help and refusing it.
  • A licensed nurse reviews the plan at home. She catches changes in skin, balance, and transfers before they become an ER visit.
  • Every shift is verifiable. Caregivers clock in through a GPS app, and our office is reachable 24/7 to arrange backup.
  • Screened, then kept sharp. Background check, drug screen, work-history verification, training alongside a veteran caregiver, and continuing education each year.
  • No weekly minimums, no contract. Start with three morning bath visits and add hours only if you need them.
  • You meet the caregiver first. We match on temperament, not availability.

Starting Personal Care: What the First Two Weeks Look Like

A call that reaches a person

You get a Lavender care coordinator, not a call center, and the office answers around the clock. We cover what help is needed, what it costs, and what the schedule could look like.

A free in-home assessment

The owner or a care coordinator visits, often with a licensed nurse, and walks the actual route your loved one takes each morning: bedroom, bathroom, stairs. In Dayton and nearby Beavercreek, the visit is free and carries no obligation.

Paperwork without a contract

No required length of service and no weekly minimum, so you keep full flexibility from the first day.

A caregiver you meet before day one

We match on personality and daily routine, then introduce the caregiver in person before the first shift.

Nurse check-ins that continue

The care plan gets updated as needs change, which for personal care usually means adding hours before a crisis forces it.

Most cases are staffed within one to two weeks, faster when a hospital discharge is driving the timeline.

Questions Dayton Families Ask Before Starting Personal Care

It depends on the hours scheduled and how much hands-on help is needed, so we quote per family after the assessment. There are no weekly minimums and no contract, so a few short morning visits stay affordable.

Medicare generally does not cover ongoing non-medical care. With the Dayton VA and Wright-Patterson nearby, many local families qualify for VA benefits, while others use long-term care insurance, an Ohio Medicaid waiver, or private pay.

Often within days. We prioritize discharge cases because the first two weeks at home are when falls and missed medications are most likely.

This is one of the most common calls we get. Caregivers start with the tasks your loved one accepts, build trust over a few visits, and work up to bathing rather than forcing it on day one.

Yes. Families across the Dayton area bring us in for one-on-one help with bathing, grooming, and meals when facility staff are stretched across too many residents.
